Archery and Muzzleloader elk hunting is as good as it gets and frankly it is my favorite time of year! I am passionate about it and live for it! I offer 4 weeks of Archery Hunting every fall with each being a full 5 day hunt. Muzzleloader is one week (5 day hunt)win duration which is the third week of the archery season.
Archery hunters will typically ask which week is best and the truth is, it really does vary each year. Weather plays a big part in this given elk will be less active in warm or hot weather so it can limit the window of opportunity each day. Extended wet weather from snow or rain can also have a impact on the hunting as elk sometimes will not be as vocal in these conditions. However, once bad weather breaks is when the magic will happen. In general, all weeks can truly be productive, especially while varying the tactics to fit the situation at hand. Typically, the early season can offer the chance for bigger bulls as they haven’t been hunted or harvested yet, and due to biological factors they are not yet herded up with harems of cows. During the later weeks generally elk will be talking more as the peak of the rut comes into play. It will be more difficult to hunt the big bulls as they will be rounding up harems of cows, but all of the bulls are fired up and want in on the action. This can make it easier to convince satellite bulls to come to the call as competition for cows increases.
Tips and tactics for how I hunt. During periods when elk are active, we will be very mobile in mornings and evenings during the prime time trying to locate and slip in on a vocal bull. If the elk are not talking we will resort to watching active game trails in and out of feeding or bedding areas. We also spent time watching active wallows, and this can really pay off if we are hit with some warm weather. Another classic western hunting strategy to try is to try and use binoculars to spot elk from high vantage points and once they are found, we will formulate a plan to stalk in on them and make a shot. My hunting strategy will be a mix of aggressive, and passive, depending on the conditions and set up at hand!
If you are a muzzleloader hunter, it would be great if you are comfortable shooting your equipment out to a range of 100 yards. And make sure you're wearing your orange if you're toting around a firearm!
Safety first.
